چکیده

The production rates of DOC and POC by phytoplankton during the FRUELA 95 cruise were estimated by means of time-course experiments of C-bicarbonate incorporation. A three-compartment carbon exchange model was used to avoid the artifacts that may appear in end-point experiments due to heterotrophic removal of recently released DOC. The study area was classified into three regions with different ecological characteristics: Bransfield Strait, Gerlache Strait and the Gerlache–Bransfield Confluence (GB Confluence). Percent extracellular release (PER) for all stations ranged from 3% to 47%, with an average of 24%. In surface (5m depth) waters, POC and DOC production rates were higher in Gerlache Strait than in the GB Confluence and Bransfield Strait. PER values followed an opposite trend, with an average of 26% in Bransfield Strait, 17% in the GB Confluence and 13% in Gerlache Strait. In Gerlache Strait, PER at 10m depth was significantly higher than at the surface. With pooled data from all experiments, there was a positive relationship between DOC and POC production rates (log–log), but the slope significantly smaller than 1.0 indicated an inverse trend between PER and primary production rate. Phytoplanktonically produced DOC appeared to meet carbon requirements of heterotrophic prokaryotes in the whole area. A positive relationship between prokaryotic heterotrophic production and DOC production rate was found only in Bransfield Strait. These differences are discussed in relationship with the ecological characteristics of the different regions r 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A comparison between glass fiber and membrane filters for the estimation of phytoplankton POC and DOC production

We tested the performance of 2 types of glass fiber filters (GF/F: 0.7 pm; GF/C: 1.2 pm) and 2 membrane filters (PC0.2: polycarbonate 0.2 p; CE0.22: mixed cellulose esters 0.22 pm) in estimating chlorophyll a and primary production with the 14C technique. Four experiments were carried out with water samples from the NW Mediterranean, the NE Atlantic and the Antarctic Ocean. The first experiment...

Effect of a long-term cultivation and crop rotations on organic carbon in loess derived soils of Golestan Province, Northern Iran

The effects of 34 years cultivation on organic carbon content of the loess derived soils were studied in Golestan province, northern Iran. Soil organic carbon (SOC) showed significant decrease in most of cases. The minimum and maximum SOC decreases were 4 and 51.14 Mg C ha-1/30 cm for 34 years. In a few cases there was an increase in SOC up to 16.93 Mg C ha-1/30 cm over the period of 34 years i...

Incorporation of aged dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by oceanic particulate organic carbon (POC): An experimental approach using natural carbon isotopes

Incorporation of C-depleted (old) dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on/into particulate organic carbon (POC) has been suggested as a possible mechanism to explain the low DC-POC values observed in the deep ocean [Druffel, E.R.M., Williams, P.M., 1990. Identification of a deep marine source of particulate organic carbon using bomb C. Nature, 347, 172–174.]. A shipboard incubation experiment was per...
